Gestational Interface is developed as a collaboration between Lena’s practice and the physical practice of contortionist and mouth-hanging artist Gonzalo Becerra. Together, they explore the relationship between the body, wearable prosthetics, contortion, slime, and flexible matter.
The interface is understood as a membrane that connects us to the world while also separating us from it. It creates a boundary between the inside and the outside of the body, while allowing for exchange between them. Through Gonzalo’s contortion practice and the wearable elements, the body is pushed into unfamiliar shapes and states, evoking creatures in a process of gestation and mutation.
The performance brings together two practices that approach the body through transformation and physical extension. Gonzalo’s ability to stretch, suspend, and reshape his body becomes intertwined with the flexible materials and prosthetic forms. Slime further extends this relationship, becoming a material that moves, stretches, leaks, and changes.
The materials are also charged with an element of generational trauma, connecting processes of gestation and mutation with what is inherited, carried through the body, and transformed.
